We began by excavating to a depth of 250mm
compacting the sub-base to create a firm, level foundation. A breathable geotextile membrane was laid, followed by a layer of recycled foamed glass (Glapor) insulation to break capillary moisture rise. A second geotextile separated the insulation from the limecrete above.
The limecrete slab was mixed using Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL 5), sharp sand, and coarse aggregate, with synthetic fibres added to minimise shrinkage cracking. Poured and tamped in 100mm layers, the slab was then damp-cured for a minimum of 96 hours and protected from traffic for up to three weeks.
Unlike concrete, limecrete allows a building to breathe, making it ideal for older and traditionally built Irish homes. It manages moisture naturally, supports underfloor heating, and provides excellent thermal performance.
